2009
The story of Axolot Diving Expeditions begins in 2009 when Jean- Charles Erba, originally from France, arrives in Tulum, Mexico, and very quickly falls in love with the cenotes of the Yucatan, Without much hesitation, Jean-Charles (JC) decided to train as a cave diver and began to explore the caves of the area with friends. Over time he turned his passion for cave diving in his job. Under the name “Zen Diving” JC offered guided cavern tours to recreational divers that wanted to visit the Cenotes.
In 2010 Jaime De La Puerto Lazar, originally from Spain, arrived in Tulum to dive the Cenotes and become a Divemaster. As an experienced recreational diver, Jaime wanted to learn new things and go on a guided Cavern tours and this is where he first met JC! Not only was Jaime hooked on cavern diving from that point onwards but he and JC began hanging out more and soon became close friends. Not wanting to miss out on the fun Jaime soon decided he wanted to get certified as a cave diver which he did soon after.
Whilst staying close friends, both Jaime and JC began to each build their own diving careers in Mexico. JC continued to build his company and gathering experience whilst Jaime began his journey towards becoming a Cave Diving Instructor with a well known company in the area. Over a period of 4 years he became a Technical Cave Diving Instructor and began exploring more and more, becoming an active explorer in the area.
2016
In 2016 Elliot Smith, originally from England, came to Tulum on a diving vacation, specially to dive the caves of the area. Already an experienced cave diver, Elliot signed up for two weeks of guided diving with one of the local dive shops, and who was his guide? Jaime! During his trip he built up a good rapport with Jaime and decided that he would one day move to Mexico to chase his cave diving dreams.
By 2017 Elliot, Jaime and JC were all together in Tulum, working on there own separate projects. JC a business owner, Jaime an experienced technical cave diving instructor and Elliot now working in the same shop as Jaime towards becoming a cave instructor which he did in 2021.
2024
2024 marked the birth of Axolot Diving Expeditions. With JC moving to the Philippines, Jaime planning on moving back to Spain and Elliot staying in Tulum, they decided to create a company that would offer dive trips to some of the most exotic, remote and challenging dive sites on the planet.
Their long term goal is to create a mentorship program with their guests, helping them to achieve some of their diving goals in a safe, controlled and rewarding way. With three training bases around the world for divers wanting to drastically improve their technique, over 20 years working in the diving and service industry and experience diving all over the world; we are excited to see you on our next expedition!
Why Axolot?
The Axolotl, an extraordinary creature endemic to Mexico, embodies resilience, adaptability, and a deep connection to the underwater world—just like us. Thriving in the harshest environments, it primarily inhabits the entrances of caves, much like the places where we built our foundation as divers.
This mystical amphibian has evolved to exist entirely underwater, a true survivor in its element. In the same way, we have shaped ourselves through exploration, pushing limits, and embracing the challenges of the depths. It is in this environment that we met, grew, and forged our path together—creating a dive team that reflects the spirit of the axolotl: strong, adaptable, and deeply connected to the water.
MEET THE TEAM

Elliot
Elliot is originally from Bromley, a commuter town just outside of London.
He started his diving journey at the ripe old age of 11. With his father by his side he managed to gain his Junior Open Water certification and spent the rest of the vacation diving as much as possible.
Contrary to his positive first experiences of diving, Elliot did not dive again until the age of 19.
Having left school at 16 he was able to secure a job at a publishing firm in central London, working within the advertising/marketing sector. After nearly three years of working in an office Elliot decided it was time for a change and booked flights to the Caribbean, with the idea of an extended vacation. His destination was St Eustatius, a small island in the Dutch Antilles. Within weeks of being on the island scuba diving once again peaked his interests and he began to volunteer for the marine park; securing moorings, cleaning hulls of boats, anything for him to spend some time underwater. It was at this point he decided that he would not go back to working in London and instead would pursue a career as a diver. Elliot spent several months working as a dive guide when he began to feel that he could offer more to his fellow divers than just guided tours underwater and he decided to move to the Dominican Republic to become a scuba diving instructor.
It was in the Dominican Republic Elliot had his first experiences of cave diving. He undertook a guided cavern tour and was blown away by the sheer size and beauty of the cave. He immediately contacted a local cave diving instructor and completed his IANTD Sidemount Cave Diver certification. Working as a dive instructor during the week, at the weekends Elliot went cave diving whenever possible. He eventually moved onto Providenciales, part of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Working in a high end resort offering some of the best wall diving in the world he began to hone his skills as a dive instructor offering a high level of service but started to crave a new challenge in diving. During this time Elliot continued to push his limits as a cave diver, exploring various small caves I and around the island but nothing of significance.
In September 2016 Elliot came to Mexico on vacation. After one month of solid cave diving he decided that his next job would have to be in the cave diving paradise of the Yucatan Peninsula. Within one year he had relocated to Mexico to further his diving career and pursue his passion for cave diving. He began working for one of the most reputable dive centers in the area, whilst working his way towards becoming a cave diving instructor. Since first arriving in Mexico Elliot has been continuing to focus on his development as both a diver and an instructor. During his free time you can find Elliot in the gym, going for a long run or heading out into the jungle to go diving or exploring with friends. Elliot joined the Zen Diving team in January 2025 to help offer our guests high level diving with a personal touch!

JAIME
Jaime was born in Madrid, right in the heart of Spain—about as far from the ocean as one can get. When he was around nine years old, his family moved to a small village in the mountains just an hour north of Madrid. There, surrounded by nature, he developed a deep connection with the outdoors through mountain biking, skiing, hiking, and camping—activities that continue to shape his lifestyle to this day.
Despite growing up inland, Jaime was fortunate to spend two weeks every summer in Galicia, in the northwest of Spain just above Portugal. These summers quickly became the highlight of his year. From a young age, he loved being in the water. He learned to swim early and was always comfortable in the sea, spending entire days playing in the waves and jumping from rocks into the chilly waters of the Atlantic.
After finishing school, Jaime was unsure of what career path to follow. He enrolled in a programming course, which he found both interesting and challenging, but ultimately decided that life in an office wasn’t for him. He left his studies and became a lifeguard and swimming instructor instead. It was during this time that he met a scuba diving instructor—an encounter that would change everything. He soon completed his Open Water course, offered free to the swimming pool staff. The conditions weren’t ideal—cold water, not-so-great weather, and very little marine life—but for Jaime, the experience was transformative. He had discovered a part of the world he never knew he could access.
Immediately hooked, Jaime bought his own gear and continued diving. When he started asking how to make a living in the dive industry, he was told he needed to be fluent in English, and that knowing a third language wouldn’t hurt. Believing he wasn’t good at languages, he briefly gave up on the idea—until he decided to move to London with his brother to improve his English.
After two years in London, Jaime felt ready to pursue his dream of traveling and diving around the world. He planned to return to Spain eventually, but life had other ideas. In 2010, his first stop was Tulum, Mexico, where he planned to stay for three months to complete his Divemaster course. There, he discovered the cenotes and fell in love with cave diving, guided and inspired by JC, who passed on his passion for the underground world.
Initially intending to move on to Utila, Honduras for his instructor course, Jaime instead chose to stay in Mexico, completing his Full Cave Diver course and investing in the necessary equipment. He spent the next year living the dream—diving caves and guiding cavern tours in the cenotes. Still, he felt there was more to see, so he spent the next two years (2011–2012) traveling the world, diving in as many places as possible and sharing his love for Mexico’s unique cave systems with everyone he met.
In 2013, Jaime returned to Tulum with the intention of settling down. He built his first sidemount harness with a friend, Leo, and in 2015 he discovered his first cave to explore—an unforgettable experience shared with friends who helped guide him through the process. Shortly after, he met Kim Davidsson and later Patrick Widmann, owners of ProTec Dive Centers, where he would work for the next seven years.
During his time at ProTec, Jaime continued his education and became a technical and cave diving instructor, eventually teaching all related levels. He met Elliot—first as a client, then as a colleague and close friend—and took part in numerous cave exploration and scientific projects. His passion for cave diving led him around the world, and in recent years, he has expanded that passion into mine diving as well.

JC
Jean-Charles (JC) grew up in a small town in central France. Never particularly drawn to school, he knew early on that real-world experience would be his best teacher. One summer, he worked tirelessly to save money for a flight to Ireland, where he hoped to learn English and work in restaurants. He had no clear career plan, but speaking English and gaining international experience seemed like a good way to open doors.
After mastering English, he set his sights on learning Spanish, which led him to Mexico. He found work as a hotel receptionist and bartender in Tulum, and during his time off, he did a Discovery Dive in Casa Cenote. That single dive changed everything, he didn’t know it at the time, but it did. Instantly hooked, he quickly signed up for an Open Water course and spent every free moment diving.
A local dive shop owner noticed his enthusiasm and offered him the chance to train as a Divemaster in exchange for work. Without pay, JC worked daily shifts at the dive shop while keeping his hotel job to support himself. It was exhausting, but he was determined.
While diving in the cenotes, he became fascinated by the tunnels and passageways just out of reach. He constantly wondered: What’s over there? Where does this tunnel go? Realizing he couldn’t explore them without proper training, he saved every penny to pursue cave diving.
In December 2009, he took his Intro to Cave course with Kim Davidson. That was it—he was hooked. The challenge, the skill level, the adventure—it all clicked. He completed his Full Cave course with Robbie Schmittner and, after 15 months of hard work, decided to leave the hospitality industry behind and dedicate himself fully to diving.
His passion paid off when he was offered a manager position at another dive center, where he met Jaime. They quickly became friends and then, dive buddies. Years later, while diving in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia and Malaysia, their paths crossed again in Thailand while both of them were traveling the world. He even spent a few years in Sweden before returning to Tulum in 2015 to reignite his passion for cave diving.
Back in Mexico, JC focused on refining his skills—refreshing his cave diving techniques, mastering sidemount, and becoming an instructor. By the end of 2015, he opened his own dive center, Zen Diving. But he wasn’t done learning. He pursued further training, enrolling in an instructor program with Patrick Widmann at ProTec, where he met Elliot. Their connection would later prove instrumental in the creation of Axolot Diving Expeditions.
Zen Diving grew into a successful business, allowing JC to hire two guides. In 2019, he finally took a vacation, diving caves in Sardinia, France, and Mallorca—where he fell in love with Sa Gleda. But upon returning to Mexico, disaster struck: COVID-19 shut everything down.
With tourism at a standstill, JC lost everything—his shop, his home, his staff. Forced to sell the company car, he shut down Zen Diving and took a job in a food truck just to get by. But in those uncertain months, he started dreaming again—about diving, adventure, and the future.
Determined to rebuild, he landed a job with Nautilus Liveaboards, working in Isla Guadalupe with great white sharks before moving to Socorro. Saving every dollar, he finally bought his KISS Sidewinder rebreather. To fund his next level of training, he took a seasonal job in Iceland, guiding dives in Silfra, and later returned to Mexico for his Cave CCR and MOD2 courses.
With his skills sharper than ever, JC joined Master Liveaboards as a Cruise Director and Operations Manager in Bikini Atoll and Truk Lagoon. That’s where wreck diving stole his heart. The history, the silent giants resting on the seafloor—he was completely captivated.
Back in Tulum, he pushed his limits further, completing his CCR MOD3 on the Fathom MKIII and finally diving the legendary Wakulla Room and deep sections of The Pit. It was clear what he wanted: to explore the world’s most remote dive sites and share those experiences with others.
That’s how Axolot Diving Expeditions was born. Alongside Jaime and Elliot, JC built a company dedicated to adventure, technical diving, and expeditions to the most breathtaking places on the planet.
And so, the journey continues…
