Program

Join Axolot Diving Expeditions for an exclusive cave diving adventure in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. Led by JC Erba and Tamara Adame, better known as Cenote Girl, this expedition takes you beyond the familiar cenotes to explore some of the Yucatán Peninsula’s lesser-dived underwater caves.

Combining technical cave diving, remote dive sites, local gastronomy, and Mayan heritage, this eight-day expedition offers a different perspective on Mexico’s extraordinary underground world.

From the first dives in the deep caves around Mérida to a unique cenote containing archaeological remains, every day brings a new opportunity to explore, learn, and experience the incredible diversity of the Yucatán’s subterranean landscape.

Our expedition begins at 9:00 AM at ProTec Dive Center in Tulum, where we meet the team, organize our equipment, and make sure everyone has everything needed for the days ahead.

Once the gear is checked and the vehicles are packed, we set off on the road to Mérida, the cultural capital of Yucatán.

After arriving, we settle into our accommodation and prepare our equipment for the first day of cave diving. In the evening, we gather for dinner, get to know the team, and discuss the plans for the upcoming dives.

It’s time to relax, recharge, and get ready to discover a different side of Yucatán cave diving.

The next two days are dedicated to exploring the underwater caves surrounding Mérida, with dives at two different cenote systems selected for their unique characteristics and exploration potential.

Our mornings begin with a hearty local breakfast before we load the vehicles and head out to the dive sites. Guided by JC Erba and Tamara Adame, we venture into some of the region’s lesser-dived caves, discovering the geological formations, passages and distinctive environments that make cave diving in northern Yucatán so fascinating.

After each dive, we return to the dive center to refill our tanks before cleaning and preparing our equipment for the following day.

Evenings are spent sharing a delicious local dinner, reviewing the day’s dives, and exchanging stories about the passages explored and the discoveries made along the way.

At Axolot Diving Expeditions, the adventure doesn’t end when we leave the water. Every dive is an opportunity to share knowledge, refine our skills and experience the unique atmosphere of underground exploration together.

Cave exploration is only one part of the Yucatán experience. After three days on the move, we take a well-deserved break from diving to discover the region’s rich cultural heritage.

The day is an opportunity to explore Mérida, a vibrant colonial city known for its architecture, museums, traditional markets, and deep connections to Mayan history.

Depending on the group’s interests, we can visit local museums, explore the historic city center, discover nearby archaeological sites, or simply enjoy the city’s food and atmosphere.

This surface interval also gives us valuable time away from diving before returning to the caves for the next stage of the expedition.

Whether you’re interested in history, archaeology, architecture, or local culture, Mérida offers plenty of ways to experience the Yucatán beyond its underground world.

Bikini Barbecue

After a day dedicated to culture, relaxation, and recovery, it’s time to return to the caves.

Over the next two days, we’ll explore two additional dive sites, each offering a different perspective on the complex underwater cave systems of the Mérida region.

Our routine remains simple and efficient: breakfast together, equipment preparation, a packed lunch for the day, and then off to another incredible cave diving experience.

Under the guidance of JC and Tamara, we’ll continue discovering the region’s remarkable subterranean landscapes, with a focus on responsible exploration, good diving practices, and respect for these fragile environments.

After the dives, we’ll return to refill tanks, clean our equipment, and enjoy another evening of local food and shared experiences.

Four days of cave diving across different cenote systems provide an opportunity to appreciate the diversity of the Yucatán’s underwater world and the distinctive character of each cave.

We usually take a break on the 6th day where we’ll only do one dive in the morning and enjoy a nice and easy afternoon relaxing and discovering Bikini Island where our chef will cook us a nice meal on the island, barbecue style.

For the final stage of our cave diving adventure, we leave Mérida and travel to Homun, where we’ll settle into new accommodation before exploring a particularly special cenote.

This site offers a remarkable connection between the underground world and the ancient history of the Yucatán, with bones and archaeological remains that provide a glimpse into the region’s distant past.

The dive is a unique opportunity to experience the intersection of geology, archaeology, and underwater exploration in one of Mexico’s most fascinating environments.

As always, we approach these sites with the utmost respect for their cultural and archaeological significance, following appropriate access rules and conservation practices.

It’s a memorable way to conclude our exploration of the caves of northern Yucatán.

All adventures eventually come to an end, and it’s time to pack our equipment and make the journey back to Tulum.

After eight days of cave diving, exploration, local food, cultural discoveries, and unforgettable moments underground, we return with new experiences, shared memories, and a deeper appreciation for the hidden world beneath the Yucatán Peninsula.

Thank you for joining Axolot Diving Expeditions, JC Erba, and Tamara Adame for this adventure in Mérida.

We hope this expedition has inspired you to keep exploring, keep learning, and keep discovering the extraordinary places that make cave diving so special.

The adventure doesn’t stop here. We look forward to diving with you again on another Axolot expedition, somewhere else in the world.
